After winter-retreat was over in Doksung Chonglim monastery, one monk, with his three fellow monks dropped by and asked, "What is the essence of Bodhidharma's coming from the West?"
Venerable Master Hye-Am answered, "It is smoking beneath the ocean." One of the monks immediately stoop up, prostrated three times and said, "Let me ask you again! What is the essence of Bodhidharma's coming from the West?" Venerable master said, "No reason to ask twice. It is smoking beneath the ocean."
They prostrated together and left saying, "We will study."
