Mysticism & Gospel of Thomas – No. 65 – The Unwise

Verse - The Unwise

He said, "A certain man had a vineyard and rented it out to tenants so that they could work it and he could receive the fruit from them. He sent his servant to get the fruit from the vineyard. They seized his servant and beat him, almost killing him. The servant ran away and told his master. His master said, 'Perhaps he did not recognize you.'

He sent another servant. The tenants beat him too. Then the master sent his son. He said, 'Perhaps they will show some respect to my son.' Those tenants, when they learned that he was the heir to the vineyard, seized him and killed him. Let anyone who has two ears listen better."

Comment

This parable is intended to make us aware that when the call sounds to awaken and bring in the harvest of our lives, not everyone is ready to follow this call. Most are so attached to the external wealth of life that they reject or even persecute and kill those who speak of giving up and giving away external wealth and gaining inner wealth. With this parable, Jesus predicted his own fate for those who have ears to hear.
