Mysticism & Gospel of Thomas – No. 64 – Living Right

Verse - Living Right

Jesus said, “A man was receiving guests. When he had prepared the meal, he sent his servant to invite the guests. The servant went to the first and said to him, ‘My master invites you.’ The first said, ‘I have money from merchants. They will come to me this evening. I will give them orders. Please excuse me for the meal.’

He went to another and said to him, ‘My master invites you.’ The latter said to him, ‘I have bought a house and I am needed for one day. I will not have time.’ He went to another and said to him, ‘My master invites you.’ The latter said, ‘My friend is getting married and I am preparing the meal. I will not be able to come. Please excuse me for the meal.’

He went to another, he said to him, ‘My master invites you.’ He said to him, ‘I have bought a farm. I am just collecting the rent. I will not be able to come. Please excuse me.’ The servant returned and told his master, ‘Those you invited to the meal send their excuses.’ The master said to his servant, ‘Go out into the street and bring whomever you find and invite them to eat.’ The sellers and traders will not want to enter my father’s place.”

Comment

The last sentence is a reminder to be alert and always ready to follow the call of light. For it depends on our response to the call whether we remain attached to external life and perish with it, or whether we find eternal life. For we will be judged according to the nature of our disposition and the degree of our alertness and willingness, as another quoted word of the Lord makes clear:

I will judge you in the things in which I find you.
