Mysticism & Gospel of Thomas – No. 34 – Reality Blindness

Verse - Reality Blindness

Jesus said, “If a blind man leads a blind man, they will both fall into a pit.”

Comment

This word is quoted here in its correct context, namely with the introductory reference to the Pharisees and scribes, whom Christ calls "blind leaders of the blind", by which he means:

If only one person who is focused on the external word and blind to the inner word and spiritual truths teaches and guides an unawakened person, then both remain equally caught up in ignorance and do not see and follow the path to the light that the Perfect One makes visible to all those who have become spiritually awake and are open to the essential.

In another word, too, Christ calls the scribes and Pharisees blinded leaders who consider the unessential to be essential, who confuse the external with the internal, "clean the outside of the cup and dish, but neglect to ensure that the inside is kept clean, who appear pious on the outside but are full of hypocrisy" and darkness on the inside.
