A call to salvation of the soul – One must likewise rouse the slackened spirits from their spiritual slumber
A call to save the soul - from the prayer book of my great-grandmother from Einsiedeln (January 10, 1900). The 90-year-old father of Christianity (Pope Leo) announces with his mighty word.
That is why it is so extremely important and necessary in the interest of the individual as well as the community to remind people of their dignity and duty. In the same way one must rouse the slack spirits from their spiritual slumber, must recall the concern for the salvation of souls of those who carelessly jeopardize this salvation daily, even hourly and who lose the heavenly and eternal goods out of sheer carelessness and high spirits, for which alone we are in the world.
Now all this lies in the purpose of the holy year. During this whole time the Holy Church, as a kind mother, knowing only gentleness and mercy, seeks all possible ways and means to steer people's thoughts and aspirations on better paths. She is particularly concerned that true repentance will not blot out sins and make life better for everyone.
Imbued with this thought, the Church strives to appease God's offended majesty with redoubled zeal and increased fervor, and to implore down from heaven the fullness of divine mercies. Abundantly she opens the treasures of grace that she is commissioned to distribute, and invites all Christianity to have joyful hope in the forgiveness of sins.
At the same time, she is inspired by the desire to conquer even stubborn spirits with an excess of love and forbearance. Shouldn't we expect plenty of fruit there, if it pleases God, fruit such as our time needs?
